Volkswagen Infotainment focuses on synergies in car connectivity

Since the beginning of the year it is official: Volkswagen Infotainment is one of the companies under the umbrella of CARIAD (formerly: Car.Software Organisation). Within Volkswagen AG, CARIAD bundles competences and companies that develop software in the vehicle and for the digital ecosystems - and is therefore the ideal parent company for Volkswagen Infotainment's innovative connectivity solutions.

CARIAD's strategic goal is to increase the in-house share of software development in the vehicle to over 60 percent in just a few years. The software scopes are to generate considerable economies of scale at Volkswagen AG and thus noticeably reduce the costs for software per vehicle for all brands.

Volkswagen Infotainment plays a central role in this. The company develops hardware and software for vehicles in the Volkswagen Group. These include development work on the uniform vehicle operating system "VW.OS" for all cars and their connection to the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud, a standardised infotainment platform, all assistance systems up to highly automated driving and parking in end customer vehicles, software functions for connecting drive, chassis and charging technology, as well as ecosystems for all mobility services and digital business models of the brands. Volkswagen Infotainment thus makes significant contributions to the domains "Connected Car & Device Platform" , "Intelligent Body & Cockpit", "Automated Driving", "Vehicle Motion & Energy" and "Digital Business & Mobility Services".

In the future, vehicles will be "online" and offer many new functions for the customer.

"Volkswagen Infotainment is playing a key role in implementing the idea of a fully networked vehicle: starting with the development of the Online Connectivity Unit (OCU) and continuing with the development work on the VW Automotive Cloud and the VW.OS operating system," explains Bernhard Krausse.

The uniform group-wide software architecture is intended to bring together previously parallel development paths in the brands and ensure that many functions, such as software updates or updates in the area of cybersecurity, can be provided during the lifetime of the vehicle.

The motivation of Volkswagen Infotainment remains the same, assures Tobias Nadjib: "We enable cars and people around the world to connect with the outside world in a meaningful way - to open up new possibilities and make life easier."
